LRGV Nocturnal Bird Migration Study

The Eddystone Lantern 12th Oct 1901

From the painting by Miriam Eagle Clarke

Copied from the Frontispiece of the book titled Studies in Bird Migration (1912) authored by the painter's husband, William Eagle Clarke. The painting depicts a large aggregation of night migrating birds attracted to the light from a lighthouse in the English Channel. This may be the first work of art illustrating birds in nocturnal migration (although they were disoriented from making migration progress by the bright light used to assist ship navigation).
